The People and Government of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory, should be very proud that one of their own children of descent, Actor/Campaigner, Trent Lamont Miller ("Silcott") with the help of Janice Panton MBE, Government Representative for Montserrat based in London, and members of the UK Overseas Territories Association, has finally been able to push forward a forthcoming change in British nationality law, that will remove a historical discriminatory anomaly denying children born abroad out-of-wedlock to British overseas territories Fathers (before 1 July 2006) and Mothers (before 1 January 1983.) Thereby providing equality under British nationality law with those from mainland U.K.
The U.K. government has done the right & proper thing stating it intends to legislate to remove this hurtful & demeaning discrimination. A public consultation has been launched and is open until May 6.
After that, the Government is expected to bring forward a Sovereign Borders Bill for consideration in Parliament in order to put the plans into law. This is a day to be celebrated. Our voices have finally been heard! Thank you to all our supporters.
